Diario de Cuba: Pioneros en Manhattan, por Enrique del Risco:

El milagro puro de que haya sobrevivido esa muestra de objetos que en casi cualquier parte del mundo hubiesen ido a parar al más allá de los tarecos inservibles, es parte de la historia que cuenta esta exposición. La historia de generaciones aferradas a cuanta cosa les pasara por delante, tarecos insignificantes que, de pura escasez, se volvían únicos, irremplazables. La historia de generaciones educadas en el materialismo dialectico e histórico por un sistema que, al mismo tiempo, llevaba a cabo una guerra a muerte contra la materia misma. La historia de familias individuales y concretas cuyo coleccionismo, voluntario o forzoso, encuentra sentido en una exhibición como esta. En cualquier caso una historia muy poco excepcional, si se tiene en cuenta que hubo una época en que un tercio de la población mundial estaba sometido a experiencias similares.

Cuba Counterpoints: Pioneros: A Collector’s Diary

There could not have been better outcome for the stuff conserved by late generations of Cubans, who were not convinced of the prosperous future the state propaganda promised to them. These “souvenirs” of the past document not only state practices but individual lives. They point at the role that individuals played in the construction of Cuba’s revolutionary utopia. Pioneros… is tribute to all of them. It is also a way to honor my grandparents, the foremost hoarders in my family.

Objets, documents et photos de l’univers matériel des enfants cubains dans les années 60, 70 et 80 rassemblés par Maria A. Cabrera Arus (auteur du site Cuba Material) et Meyken Barreto.

Curated by Maria A. Cabrera Arus and Meyken Barreto, the show features objects, documents, and photographs by artist Geandy Pavón. On view September 16–30 at the Arnold and Sheila Aronson Galleries of the New School in New York City.

Diario de Cuba – La cultura material de los niños en Cuba (1960-1989): exposición en Nueva York:

El universo material de los niños me pareció un buen tema, no solamente porque la niñez de casi todos los cubanos que hoy viven en Cuba, y de muchos de los que hoy pensamos a Cuba desde cualquier otro lugar del mundo, transcurrió en una cotidianidad marcada por estos objetos, sino sobre todo por el interés que el régimen político cubano prestó a la infancia, entendida como cantera del futuro “hombre nuevo” socialista.
